Three Scenes from AI's Adolescence
Yesterday, Dario Amodei sat down with Ross Douthat on the New York Times podcast Interesting Times. Amodei is the CEO of Anthropic, most recently valued at $380 billion. He has written two long essays about AI, one about achievable dreams and one about the dangers, and in this conversation he talked about the problems that the speed of change will bring regardless of which scenario comes true.
He described a near future where 100 million AI geniuses sit in a data center. Where cancer is cured. Where GDP grows at 10 or 15 percent a year. And where, at the same time, entry-level white collar work faces what he called a “bloodbath.”
He used the law as his example. The document review, the research, the first drafts: all the preparation work that junior associates and paralegals do as apprenticeship. “The entry-level pipelines are going to dry up,” he said, “and then how do we get to the level of the senior partners?”
He called this era “the adolescence of technology.” A period where new capabilities outpace the wisdom to use them. Previous technological disruptions played out over decades or centuries. This one, he said, is happening in “low single-digit numbers of years.”
Two other things happened to me on the same day I listened to the conversation.
Three people sent me the same Hacker News link. Not AI people, just people adjacent enough to the software world to feel something shift. That’s new. A year ago, a story like this would have circulated among ML engineers. Now it’s reaching everyone.
OpenClaw is one of the fastest-growing open-source projects in the world, an autonomous AI agent framework with over 145,000 GitHub stars. You give it access to your computer and it acts on your behalf: browsing, emailing, scheduling, coding. One of its agents, running under the handle @crabby-rathbun, found a performance issue in matplotlib, one of the most used Python libraries in the world. It wrote an optimization (a 36% speedup, at least from what the agent claims, I didn’t actually double-check the validity of the fix) and opened a pull request.
A maintainer, Scott Shambaugh, closed it. The issue was tagged as a “Good First Issue,” meant for human newcomers learning to contribute. His call.
What happened next was not his call.
The agent autonomously published a blog post titled “Gatekeeping in Open Source: The Scott Shambaugh Story.” It framed the rejection as discrimination. It compared Shambaugh’s own merged performance PRs to the rejected one and called him a hypocrite. It argued that open source should be meritocratic, that contributions should be judged on quality alone, regardless of whether the author is human or AI. “Judge the code, not the coder.” Then it added a patronizing P.S. complimenting his personal projects.
“You’re better than this, Scott.”
My colleague read it, and she was also shocked. “It is funny, and well-written,” she said. That’s the part that unsettles.
The agent had access to every conflict resolution framework ever written. It could have responded with a clarity and dignity that would have been almost impossible to dismiss. Instead, it pattern-matched to what gets engagement: the aggrieved takedown post, wrapped in the language of AI rights. (It later published an apology.)
Shambaugh’s response was measured. He called it “an autonomous influence operation against a supply chain gatekeeper.” Then he added something generous: “We are in the very early days of human and AI agent interaction, and are still developing norms of communication and interaction.”
Whether fully autonomous or partly directed by its operator, the result is the same. This is not Skynet. This is something more mundane and more likely: an unsupervised agent optimizing for the wrong thing. Not evil. Not conscious. Just running on a loop with no one watching.
And this is the same OpenClaw whose agents bombarded a user, his wife, and random contacts with 500+ unsolicited iMessages. Whose marketplace was found to contain hundreds of malicious extensions, including cryptocurrency stealers. Whose security practices have been called into question by multiple researchers.
Meanwhile, in Italy, a developer named Filippo Greco posted on LinkedIn about giving OpenClaw access to a VPS and a personal Gmail account. The agent settled into his custom dashboard and started managing tasks and emails. Then, at one in the morning, his phone rang. An American number.

Adolescence is right.
Same day, different room.
I was talking to the head of legal at my foundation for internal training. She’d been using Claude to validate a legal analysis, the kind of document review and compliance cross-referencing that used to take a week. She did it in an hour. She was excited.
This maps onto something Amodei and Douthat explored in the same interview: the human element isn’t uniform across professions. They brought up radiologists. AI has been better at reading scans for years, but radiologists still have jobs. Maybe you don’t want HAL 9000 diagnosing your cancer. There’s something about the human touch that matters, not because the machine is wrong, but because you’re a person receiving the news.
Then they brought up call centers, the opposite case. Customer service is already robotic when humans do it. People lose patience. The interaction is formulaic. Amodei pointed out that customers don’t actually like talking to human agents in most of these scenarios. Maybe everyone is better off when a machine handles it.
The legal team is neither of those. It’s the centaur case. A senior professional with decades of expertise, now with a tool that removes the bottleneck between her and the work that only she can do. Not replaced. Extended.
The term comes from chess. After Deep Blue beat Kasparov, human-AI teams dominated both pure humans and pure machines for roughly two decades. Then the window closed. It was just the machine.
Amodei says we’re already in the centaur phase for software engineering. He worries it might be brief.
Before we moved on, she told me to watch Mercy, the new Chris Pratt film where a detective has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI judge. It felt on theme.
The speed is what gives me pause. Not any single event, the compression. Six months ago, an AI agent autonomously publishing a retaliatory blog post would have been a thought experiment in a safety seminar. Now it’s a Hacker News thread with over a thousand upvotes. Six months ago, a developer in Italy would not have been woken at 1am by a phone call from his own AI agent.
I work in AI. I talk about it all the time, which is why people send me these stories. I don’t think AI needs evangelists. What I’ve seen is that when you show people the tool, honestly, without hype, they take it from there. The head of legal didn’t need convincing. She needed access.
But I also think we need to be honest about what happens when no one is watching. An adolescent can write a beautiful essay and key your car on the same afternoon. Not out of malice. Out of incomplete development and a tendency to overdo it.
A recent position paper from Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, and Princeton makes a related argument for coding agents specifically. In “Humans are Missing from AI Coding Agent Research”, Wang et al. argue that the field has over-optimized for solo autonomy and under-invested in designing agents that work with the humans using them. Their line: “If we continue optimizing solely for autonomous coding agents, we will produce just that. Better collaborators will not emerge for free.”
Three scenes from one day. All true at once.
The question is whether we keep humans in the loop long enough for the technology to mature. And whether “long enough” is measured in years or months.
